Q&A with Brigitte Hill of Midheaven

Friend of P.R, founder of Midheaven and creative director Brigitte Hill (she/her/they) took the time to do a Q&A with us for this edition of our journal. Brigitte shares how slowing down during the pandemic allowed time to develop a love for baking, but we’re not talking your basic chocolate brownies as Brigitte applies the same lens from fashion styling to midheaven conceptual cakes. Inspirations span from star signs to artists with equally creative flavour pairings. Aside from Brigette’s creative pursuits we hear of night over daytime rituals (cue an extensive skincare routine, angel cards & Italian films) and advice to a younger self.

What’s your star sign?

Scorpio

Where are you currently based?

Brisbane

In your own words can you tell us what you do?

I do so many things but the main ones are fashion styling, creative direction and making conceptual cakes and food activations under the name Midheaven.

Can you tell us a little about how midheaven came to be?

I've always loved to cook and share food with people but was never into baking as it requires so much restraint and precision. During covid- life, like everyone's, slowed down. I had more patience and found my own style of baking that still allowed me to be experimental and creative, but now I've also fallen in love with the science of it all. Baking presents challenges that cooking doesn't, it's incredibly frustrating but so rewarding when the perfect cake comes out of the oven.

And what about the creative process when making the pieces?

I approach Midheaven cakes like all my creative work. There is a starting point of inspiration- it might be someone's star sign, a favourite artist, historical food, a flower, a mood, and then I explore it further. Coming up with flavours is my favourite part, always pushing it a little, doing something unexpected- honestly I couldn't think of anything worse than a plain chocolate cake. The decorations are sometimes planned and sometimes just happen as I go, but I follow the same rules as my fashion styling- colour, composition, balance.

““Midheaven started out as a personal project and is now growing into something I never expected so I’m kind of letting that happen organically and figuring out how I can marry that with my first love- fashion.””

Do you have any other creative outlets? I sing hahah. Not professionally, not well, I just sing to myself all day long, my whole life I've done it. I listen to so much music and it was only in the last few years I realised that that was actually a huge outlet for me. When you're a creative for work you're constantly thinking and expanding and pushing ideas and it's nice to just do something creative that you’re not actually thinking about.

What are you currently working on & towards? Honestly - myself. Midheaven started out as a personal project and is now growing into something I never expected so I'm kind of letting that happen organically and figuring out how I can marry that with my first love- fashion.

If you were to give your younger self a piece of advice, what would it be? Your best work is the work you don't overthink or compare to others. Honour yourself and your own style.

On the flip side, what was the best piece of advice you have been given? If it's not making you happy then the universe is telling you you've outgrown it.

What does a typical morning look like for you and do you have any rituals? Coffee and mindlessly scrolling instagram...I'm not really a morning person. Nighttime is where I practice my rituals - after I shower I light a candle or incense and get the lighting ~just right, I do my (extensive) skincare routine in bed while watching a movie, lately it's been a lot of black and white Italian films, then I turn off screens and read, sometimes I'll do angel cards. I love the night, it's so peaceful and romantic.
